As a 7th year teacher I have begun to “Let Go.” I am learning the difference between spoon feeding my students and assisting them to success. Most teachers in my building “spoon feed” the students and then later complain that the students aren’t learning all that they want them to, or they are too dependent on the teacher. I now have more evidence to refer them to. We as teachers want all of our students to “get it” but we must learn to let go and provide the opportunity for students to demonstrate what they are learning. It is like a baby bird learning how to fly. If the mother bird doesn’t give the baby the opportunity to fly then the baby will always stay in the nest, never knowing that they can fly.
There must be a balance of helping our students and allowing them to try without or with minimal help. In my experience all students will fall short of meeting the teacher’s expectation once or twice. Once they find the self confidence that they need and the knowledge that they have inside they will rise to the occasion and meet if not surpass the teacher’s expectations.
